Setting up family discounts

How to give the second sibling a discount, the third a bigger one, and what happens when a sibling leaves.

Updated June 4, 2026

Most schools discount siblings. Rosterra applies family discounts automatically based on a single setting per program, so you do not have to remember to apply them by hand.

Setting up

Go to /settings/programs and edit the program you want to discount. Scroll to Family discount. You can set:

  • No discount. Each sibling pays full price.
  • Flat percent off. Every sibling after the first gets the same percent off (10 percent, 20 percent, etc.).
  • Tiered percent. Second sibling gets one percent, third sibling gets another, and so on.

The discount is per program. You can give a 15 percent sibling discount on the youth program but no discount on the adult one if you choose.

How the math works

When a second child enrolls into a discounted program, Rosterra:

  1. Looks at the household and counts how many siblings are already enrolled in the same program.
  2. Applies the discount for that sibling slot (e.g., second sibling, 15 percent off).
  3. The discount is shown as a line item on the family's invoice, not hidden in the price.

This means the family can see the value of the discount they are getting. It is also good for accounting because the gross price and the discount are tracked separately.

When a sibling leaves

If the family has three kids and the oldest stops attending, the math resets:

  • The first remaining sibling pays full price.
  • The next sibling gets the second-slot discount.
  • And so on.

This is the right behavior for most schools. The discount is a sibling discount, not an "oldest child" discount.

Manual overrides

You can override the discount on any specific membership. For a scholarship case, an internal employee discount, or a long-tenured family you want to thank, edit the membership and set a custom price. The system-wide family discount stops applying and the custom price takes precedence.

Reporting

Total family discount value shows up on the monthly revenue report at /reports/discounts-used. Helps you see how much you are giving up in exchange for family loyalty.
