Customizing your belt and rank ladder

How to set up the ranks for your style, including stripes, colors, and dual-color belts.

Updated June 4, 2026

Rank ladders vary widely across martial arts styles, ninja gyms, gymnastics, and dance. Rosterra ships a starter ladder for each vertical and lets you reshape it to match your curriculum exactly.

Where to edit

Go to /settings/ranks. You will see your current ladder top to bottom, starting with the entry rank.

Adding a rank

Click Add rank. Pick:

  • Name (e.g., "Yellow Belt", "Level 2", "Bronze").
  • Color (the main color shown on the belt graphic).
  • Secondary color (optional, for dual-color belts like white-yellow, or candy-cane stripes).
  • Position (where in the ladder it sits).

Stripes

Many traditional martial arts use stripes between belts. Rosterra supports stripes as sub-positions inside a rank. So "Yellow Belt with one stripe" is a state of "Yellow Belt", not a separate rank.

Edit a rank and set the number of stripes. The promotion workflow then lets instructors award individual stripes as a student progresses, and a full promotion only happens once all stripes are earned and an exam is passed.

Renaming for your vertical

The system-wide term defaults to "Belt" for martial arts. Change it under /settings/vertical to:

  • "Level" for ninja gyms and gymnastics.
  • "Grade" for some karate styles.
  • "Stage" for dance.
  • "Rating" for sport-style progression.

The term you pick shows in the parent portal, the mobile app, and on every certificate.

Reordering

Drag a rank up or down to reorder. The order matters because rank determines class eligibility, color displays, and what shows up on the progression report.

Deleting a rank

You can delete a rank only if no students currently hold it. If anyone does, demote them first (rare) or leave the rank in place. Deleting is safe afterward.
