Taking attendance and running the kiosk

Three ways to take attendance: kiosk self check-in, instructor on a tablet, and front-desk roll call.

Updated June 4, 2026

Attendance is the heart of a busy school. Rosterra supports three patterns so you can use whatever fits your front desk.

Pattern 1: kiosk self check-in

Set up an iPad or Android tablet at your front desk in kiosk mode. Students walk in, tap their name (or scan a QR code on a key tag), and they are checked in.

  1. On the tablet, sign in once at /kiosk from the staff side.
  2. Lock the tablet to that page (Guided Access on iPad, Pinned App on Android).
  3. Configure the kiosk at /settings/kiosk-devices so it shows only today's classes and your school's brand color.

The kiosk is read-only beyond check-in. It cannot make charges, edit students, or see other information, so it is safe to leave unattended.

Pattern 2: instructor on a tablet

The instructor walks in with a tablet and marks attendance from the class roster. Good for outdoor classes, mat-side check-in, or schools that do not have a front desk.

  • Open /attendance from the staff app on the tablet.
  • Pick today's class.
  • Tap each student as they arrive.

The instructor can also add a note (e.g., "left early") and tag a make-up credit if a student arrived but cannot stay.

Pattern 3: front-desk roll call

The simplest path. Front desk opens /attendance, picks the class, and checks people off as they walk in. Works on a desktop or a phone.

What attendance unlocks

  • The parent portal shows the family their attendance history at /portal/attendance.
  • The progression engine knows who is eligible for promotion based on classes attended.
  • The retention dashboard at /reports/at-risk-members flags students whose attendance dropped, so you can reach out before they cancel.

Editing past attendance

Click any past class on /attendance to edit. There is no time limit on edits, so back-filling a few weeks after a long weekend is fine. Audit logs record who edited what, in case anyone asks.
